Course Information

This is an online course taught via Zoom

What will I be learning?

On this course you will be using the medium of applique and simple stitches like back stitch to create simple and beautiful pieces of work that you can frame, attach to a bag, attach to a cushion cover. You may have a totally different use for your creation and I will help you to achieve your vision. You will use simple templates to help you or you can create a design from your own mind.

Does the course lead to a qualification?

No

What does the course involve?

You will use fabric crayons to start your design and embroidery threads to add colour. You will use an embroidery hoop to sandwich your fabric and wadding in.

Towards the end of the course your will have to opportunity to try a little silk painting.

I am responsive to the needs of the group and will integrate relaxation techniques and welcome interesting discussion that inspire us towards wellness.

We display your work at the end of the course to celebrate your achievement

Who is the course for?

This is a beginner’s course which will also welcome you if you are more experienced and want to connect with other creative people.

This course is part of the wellbeing programme so weather you are feeling well right now and want to maintain that or you are feeling like you want to be in that creative space but are not feeling great then you too are welcome.

What do I need?

  • Spectacles for close work
  • Pen
  • Your tutor will advise you of the materials you will need for individual projects

To connect to your online course via Zoom, you will need:

  • An electronic device of your choice connected to the Internet
  • An email address

Are there any additional costs?

No

How will I know how I am progressing during the course?

At DALS, we use an Individual Learning Plan (ILP) to set and review targets and provide feedback, enabling continual reflection and evaluation throughout the course. Learners will also receive verbal and/or written feedback on marked work. Learners will use their ILP to help track and monitor their own progress towards set goals, to support personal development and achievement.

[There is no formal exam, although there is continual evaluation throughout the course].

Can I have help in the class?

At enrolment, it is important that you tell us if you have a learning difficulty or disability and require support. Learners declaring a support need will be referred for an assessment. If an enhanced support need is confirmed, a Support Package will be offered, to assist your progress in your learning and development, specific to your assessed needs.

You can arrange for your own support worker to come with you.

Progression within DALS

There are a host of creative classes in the main programme and well worth a look in our brochures. You can build your confidence with me in mindful crafts and then progress on to other classes which can be explored in the last sessions.

On completion of this course, you could progress to:

  • Painting and drawing for beginners
  • Life drawing for beginners
  • Mindful Hand stitching
  • Knitting and crochet
  • Patchwork and quilting
  • Pottery

Health and Wellbeing

The slogan you see on our brochures and leaflets is:   meet  enjoy  learn  achieve .

This is because we believe that taking part in adult and community learning can open the door to new friendships, give you something enjoyable and worthwhile to do with your time, enable you to learn something new and give you a sense of achievement.  That's got to make you feel good!

Volunteering opportunities

We have a number of rewarding volunteering opportunities both within DALS and with other organisations.  These can offer you a number of benefits, including the ability to enhance your employment prospects, and the ability to learn whilst supporting others.  If you are interested in finding out more about volunteering opportunities, please contact enquiries on 01332 956565 or email DALSenquiries@derby.gov.uk  You can also find information on volunteering opportunities on our noticeboards and website.
