NOTE: This course has already finished.
The course that helps you to work towards your own personal skills and goals. This workshop style course will be personalised to your individual needs whatever point you are at in your learning journey.
The course will create a topic based learning programme that will include elements of English, Maths, ICT, confidence building, employability and study skills.
The course will be delivered as an integrated programme and include traditional teaching methods blended with non-traditional and motivational learning e.g. visits, projects, online tasks etc.
What will I be learning?
Together with your tutor, you will decide what learning areas you need to focus on, this could include:
- Managing your money
- Time management skills
- Personal presentation & job search skills
- Identifying areas that you need help with
- Improving your reading and writing skills
- Building on the skills you already have
- Gaining or improving the skills needed for everyday life and work
- Improving your confidence and self-esteem
- Working towards your own personalised learning goals
- Progressing onto the next step course that is right for you
Does the course lead to a qualification?
These courses do not lead to a formal qualification so is a perfect way for you to get back into education or fill gaps in your knowledge without the pressure of exams.
The course will enable you to build your skills and confidence and will enable you to progress onto accredited courses as soon as you are ready.
Learners who progress quickly will still have the opportunity to take exams if appropriate.
Who is the course for?
The target groups are those with entry level Maths and/or English for whom a formal Maths or English pathway is not appropriate and those who are returning to learning after a significant break.
Initial assessment will be included in the course.
What do I need to bring?
- A4 Lined paper.
- A4 Folder.
Are there any additional costs?
How will I know how I am progressing during the course?
Feedback will be given, both verbally and by the evaluation of completed tasks & projects. You will receive verbal feedback on the results of your practical exercises.
There is no formal exam, although there is continual evaluation throughout the course.
Towards the end of each session you will use a DerbyLearn forum to record what you have done in class and comment on how you think you got on. Before the next session your tutor will reply with their feedback. This is a very good method of recording your own progress, reflecting on the session and a great way to receive motivation from your tutor.
Can I have help in the class?
If you would like to enrol on this course but think you will need some help in the class you could have support through the Learning Partners Scheme. The scheme matches learners who need additional help with a volunteer to attend the class together. Volunteers can help with confidence, practical tasks such as cutting or measuring, reading and taking notes or communicating with the tutor and other learners.
