Who is this course for

Level 1 Award in British Sign Language can be taken without any previous BSL experience. This qualification allows you to gain basic skills and confidence in understanding BSL as well as producing it.

What are the entry requirements

The tutor reserves the right to determine whether the learner can reach competency standards which includes having sufficient sight, manual dexterity, facial and body movement to produce and receive BSL. This will be first assessed during the IAG session before the course begins.

What will I be learning

This qualification is designed to teach you to communicate with Deaf people in British Sign Language BSL on a range of topics that involve simple, everyday language use. You will gain basic skills and confidence in production and reception of BSL. There will be 65 guided learning hours in the classroom. The qualification specification has been designed using the UK Occupational Language Standards 2010 at Level 1.

How will I be assessed and supported

This course leads to a qualification after successful completion of three units.
BSL 101 Introduction to BSL
BSL 102 Conversational BSL
BSL 103 Communicate in BSL about Everyday Life.                                               
The tutor reserves the right to determine whether you have reached competency standards to progress after the BSL Unit 101 assessment. 

You must be available for all exam dates

What do I need to bring?

You will need to bring a notepad, pen and a
ring binder to organise your work.

Any additional costs?

In addition to the course fees of £450, there are assessment fees for the three units, which are payable in Term 1.

Unit 101 = £21

Unit 102 = £46

Unit 103 = £46

You may be eligible for a fee remission if you're claiming eligible benefits or on a low wage. Our staff will confirm this when you complete your initial assessment before enrolling.

What can this course lead to

Upon successful completion, you may progress onto a Level 2 in BSL or employment such as a Communication Support Worker.
