Who is this course for

This course is not suitable for complete beginners to computers, you should already be able to use a computer with some confidence, access the Internet to search information and send emails. Ideally you will have some experience working with documents and understand how to stay safe online but this is not essential.

 

What are the entry requirements

To join an essential digital skills class at Level 1, you will usually have achieved essential digital skills entry Level 3 or an equivalent qualification or be working at a Level 1 standard across the 5 main digital skill areas.

An initial assessment will be completed prior to enrolling onto this course to check prior knowledge and ensure you join the correct level course.

What will I be learning

This course will cover all five skills areas set out in the national standards for essential digital skills.

These are:

Using devices and handling information.
Creating and editing.
Communicating.
Transactions.
Being safe and responsible online.
 

Typics you will cover are as follows:

Find, manage and store information online.
Create, edit and format documents using Microsoft Word
Create and edit digital media i.e. photographs
Create, edit and format spreadsheets using Microsoft Excel
Communicate and share information online including making video calls.
Use online services and shop securely online.
Be safe online and protect digital privacy and data.
Identify and solve technical problems.

How will I be assessed and supported

This course leads to an Level 1 qualification in Essential Digital Skills. There are two tests to complete, one knowledge test and a practical skills test. You are not allowed to use any notes during the exams.

Assessment dates will be confirmed in due course, please note that exams/assessments are fixed and may not be at the same time/day/venue as your usual class session so please make any necessary work or childcare arrangements etc well in advance to ensure you are able to attend.

At DALS, we use an Individual Learning Plan (ILP) to set and review targets and provide feedback, enabling continual reflection and evaluation throughout the course. Learners will also receive verbal and/or written feedback on marked work. Learners will use their ILP to help track and monitor their own progress towards set goals, to support personal development and achievement.

At enrolment, it is important that you tell us if you have a learning difficulty or disability and require support. Learners declaring a support need will be referred for an assessment. If an enhanced support need is confirmed, a Support Package will be offered, to assist your progress in your learning and development, specific to your assessed needs.

What do I need to bring?

Please bring a memory stick for storing work files, folder for storing any paper handouts, notepad, pen and proof of identification.

Any additional costs?

There may be a charge of approximately £19.50 if you fail to attend your pre-arranged exam date, this fee is set by the exam board so is subject to change.

As part of your enrolment you will receive  free online mock tests for each assessment.
