Who is this course for

If you are a beginner to BSL, this qualification enables you to gain basic skills and confidence in understanding BSL, as well as using it to communicate.
It is suitable for someone without any prior experience

What are the entry requirements

There are no entry requirements, however at the Initial Advice and Guidance session, you will be assessed for competency including having sufficient sight, manual dexterity, facial and body movement to produce and receive BSL.

What will I be learning

You will learn to communicate with Deaf people in British Sign Language (BSL) on a range of topics that involve simple, everyday language use. You will gain basic skills and confidence in production and reception of BSL.

How will I be assessed and supported

How will I be assessed and supported  During the course, you will focus on three units
Introduction to BSL
Conversational BSL
Communicate in BSL about Everyday Life
During the exams, your competency against the standards for these units will be assessed, therefore you must be available for all exam dates.

You will also have an Individual Learning Plan to set targets and review progress towards them following reflection and feedback from your tutor.

What do I need to bring?

Paper and pen.

A ring binder for notes and handouts.

Any additional costs?

In addition to the course fees of £450, there are assessment fees for the three units, which are payable in Term 1.

Unit 101 = £20

Unit 102 = £45

Unit 103 = £45

You may be eligible for a fee remission if you're claiming eligible benefits or on a low wage. Our staff will confirm this when you complete your initial assessment before enrolling.

What can this course lead to

Upon successful completion, you may progress onto Signature Level 2 Certificate in British Sign Language (BSL).
