Who is this course for

If you have already achieved a Level 1 Award in BSL, this Level 2 Certificate is the ideal progression course if you want to develop your skills further.

What are the entry requirements

You need to provide evidence of Level 1 in British Sign Language to enrol on this course.

At the Initial Advice and Guidance session, you will be assessed for competency including having sufficient sight, manual dexterity, facial and body movement to produce and receive BSL

What will I be learning

This qualification is designed to develop your skills to communicate with Deaf people using British Sign Language (BSL) in a range of everyday situations. The qualification will allow you to participate in longer and more varied conversations than at Level 1. The course will help you develop communication in BSL about real life, routine, and daily experiences. You will be able to deal with most routine communication and have enough understanding of grammar to cope with some non-routine communication. You will also learn several regional variations in sign language.

You will be expected to carry out independent learning to develop your BSL skills outside of lessons, using resources on our online learning platform, DerbyLearn.

How will I be assessed and supported

This course leads to a qualification after successful completion of three units
Unit 201 Video receptive skills
Unit 202 Storytelling in BSL
Unit 203 Conversation in BSL
During the exams, your competency against the standards for these units will be assessed, therefore you must be available for all exam dates.

You will also have an Individual Learning Plan to set targets and review progress towards them following reflection and feedback from your tutor.

What do I need to bring?

You will need to bring a notepad, pen and a
ring binder to organise your work.

Any additional costs?

Yes, the course fee is £600 and there are assessment fees for the three units, which are payable in Term 1.

BSL Unit 201 = £50
BSL Unit 202 = £61
BSL Unit 203 = £61

You may be eligible for a fee remission if you're claiming eligible benefits or on a low wage. Our staff will confirm this when you complete your initial assessment before enrolling.

What can this course lead to

Upon successful completion, you may progress onto a Level 3 in BSL or employment such as a Communication Support Worker.
