Who is this course for

This course is for adult learners who would benefit from a very small, supportive group to build the basics of reading and writing at their own pace. It is particularly suitable if you have more complex learning needs, have been out of education for a long time, or feel anxious or unsure about joining a larger class.
The course is designed to help you develop your confidence and core skills before moving on to an Access to Functional Skills English course or other learning. Teaching will be slow-paced, with plenty of time for practice, repetition, and one-to-one support.
Your tutor will create a personalised learning programme based on your individual needs. This may also include elements of confidence building, communication skills, and basic study skills to best support your progression.

What are the entry requirements

There are no formal entry requirements for this course, but an initial assessment will be completed prior to enrolling onto this course to check prior knowledge and ensure you join the correct level course.
This course is not an alternative to ESOL courses English for Speakers of Other Languages.  If English is not your first language, you may be asked to join an ESOL English for Speakers of Other Languages class instead of a Functional Skills English course depending on your current level of English skills. This is because ESOL is specially designed to help improve English speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills for non-native speakers with a much greater focus on pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary building and syntax.

What will I be learning

Together with your tutor, you will identify which skills you need to develop. This could include:
Building confidence with basic reading skills
Understanding simple texts used in everyday life
Developing basic writing skills, including spelling and sentence structure
Practising handwriting and presentation of written work
Building confidence in speaking and listening in a small group
Developing everyday communication skills
Improving confidence in working with letters, words and simple sentences
Identifying your own strengths and areas you need help with
Developing simple independent study skills and learning strategies
Building confidence and self-esteem in a supportive environment
Preparing to move on to Access to Functional Skills English or other suitable courses

How will I be assessed and supported

At DALS, we use an Individual Learning Plan to set and review targets and provide feedback, enabling continual reflection and evaluation throughout the course. You will also receive verbal and written feedback on marked work. You will use your ILP to help track and monitor your own progress towards set goals, to support personal development and achievement.
Support is a key part of this course. At enrolment, it is important that you tell us if you have a learning difficulty, disability or any other support need. Learners who declare a support need will be referred for an assessment. If an enhanced support need is confirmed, a tailored Support Package will be offered to help you make progress in your learning and development.
The small group size also means there is more time for individual help, reassurance and practice.
