This is an online course taught via ZOOM
What will I be learning?
- We will make 5 blocks of different sashiko patterns – these can be made into coasters
- Learn how to transfer design onto fabric
- How to turn corners, interface in the middles, tie knots,
- The history of sashiko and how it has influenced or been influenced by embroidery around the world.
Does the course lead to a qualification?
No the course does not lead to a qualification.
Who is the course for?
Anyone who has an interest in embroidery/stitching and would like to learn/revisit this beautiful technique.
What do I need to bring?
- 5 @ 4" x 4" (10cm x 10cm) plain cotton fabric which is slightly loosely woven (Sashiko fabric or Essex Linen by Robert Kaufman or an old well washed sheet
- 5 @ 5" x 5" (12.5cm x 12.5cm) cotton muslin or similar
- 5 @ 4" x 4" (10cm x 10cm) backing cotton
- A piece of iron on interfacing 5" x 5" medium weight
- #8 cotton perle in a colour of your choice or medium weight sashiko thread to contrast with your plain fabric
- #5 long darner
- Scissors
- Ruler
- Frixion pen or Sewline fabric pen if working with darker fabrics
- Pins
To connect to your online course via Zoom, you will need:
- An electronic device of your choice connected to the Internet
- An email address
- Headphones or speakers and microphone (these can be built into your device)

How will I know how I am progressing during the course?
At DALS, we use an Individual Learning Plan (ILP) to set and review targets and provide feedback, enabling continual reflection and evaluation throughout the course. Learners will also receive verbal and/or written feedback on marked work. Learners will use their ILP to help track and monitor their own progress towards set goals, to support personal development and achievement.
There is no formal exam, although there is continual evaluation throughout the course.
Can I have help in the class?
At enrolment, it is important that you tell us if you have a learning difficulty or disability and require support. Learners declaring a support need will be referred for an assessment. If an enhanced support need is confirmed, a Support Package will be offered, to assist your progress in your learning and development, specific to your assessed needs.
