This is an online course taught via Zoom
Total Hours: 13 hours – 7 hours online with the tutor, 6 hours on DerbyLearn
What will I be learning?
You will learn:
- to sign numbers and some basic greetings
- the signs for colours
- some basic vocabulary on family
- sign vocabulary on pets
The main aim of the course is:
- to provide an introduction to sign language to enable learners to have basic communication with deaf people in everyday life such as with families or friends, at work, school or in home life.
Does the course lead to a qualification?
No. It doesn’t lead to a qualification but learners who complete the course will be given a certificate of attendance.
Who is the course for?
- There will be 13 hours in total for the course
- 7 hours will be delivered online by the tutor
- 6 hours will be completed by learners using resources on DerbyLearn
Who is the course for?
- The course is aimed at learners who are interested in learning basic British Sign Language and who want to communicate with deaf people.
- It will be a good foundation for those learners wanting to take the Level 1 Award in British Sign Language.
What do I need to bring?
- You may want pen and paper if you want to take any notes.
To connect to your online course via Zoom, you will need:
- An electronic device of your choice connected to the Internet
- An email address
- Headphones or speakers and microphone (these can be built into your device)
Are there any additional costs?
- This is a free course
- There are no additional costs.
How will I know how I am progressing during the course?
At DALS, we use an Individual Learning Plan (ILP) to set and review targets and provide feedback, enabling continual reflection and evaluation throughout the course. Learners will also receive verbal and/or written feedback on marked work. Learners will use their ILP to help track and monitor their own progress towards set goals, to support personal development and achievement.
There is no formal exam, although there is continual evaluation throughout the course.
On completion of this course, you could progress to:
A centre based qualification course (when Covid restrictions ease)
