Course Information

A short introductory course about photos and how to enhance and edit them.  The focus will be on nature photos but this can be interpreted fairly loosely. So, in this period of lockdown: photos of your garden, plants, wildlife, places you might go to exercise, people or animals and birds out and about in natural settings, etc.

What will I be learning?

You will learn the basics of photo composition and techniques to help capture visually appealing images that are interesting to look at and tell “stories”.

On the photo editing side you’ll find out about basic editing and manipulation techniques like, rotating and straightening, cropping, adjusting and enhancing light and colour.

What do I need to bring?

This is not a course about cameras or lenses and how to use them. You can capture your images on any equipment from a phone or tablet, through compact and bridge to dslr cameras.

The course does not rely on specific editing software. However, you will need to be able to access your photos and adjust them in some sort of editing application. This may be an app on a phone, tablet, notebook or computer, or image editing software on a pc, mac or laptop. If you have a Micrsoft Windows pc/laptop there is free to download software called Paint.net that is available for download from the Internet. Some people may have other software like, Photoshop, Photoshop Elements, Lightroom or something else, which is fine. You must be able to access your photos in the editing app/software and some may need to transfer their photos between camera & software if they are on separate devices (by cable, email, cloud storage, etc).

Course delivery is online so you need to be able to navigate confidently between websites and use an existing personal email account. You will also need to create and use personal accounts for derbylearn.net and padlet.com (both are free and will be used on the course with guidance from the tutor). If time allows, the tutor will also introduce other, “fun”, apps that photos can be used with.

Zoom video conferencing will be used to deliver the taught parts of the class and you will receive an invite to join a session just before each class start time. To effectively participate in a zoom session your device or computer will need sound (speakers or headphones plus a microphone) and video (a webcam). Most phones, tablets and laptops have these built in. If you are using a pc or mac computer you may need separate equipment connected. Your equipment must be ready to use before the first session.
