Fees and Reductions 2020-2021

Our adult education courses and workshops are either fully or co-funded by the Education and Skills Funding Agency (ESFA) for adults over the age of 19 (On 31st August 2020).

For courses starting from September 2020 through to the end of July 2021 the following fees policy applies:

COMMUNITY LEARNING AND LEISURE COURSES

COMMUNITY TASTER / ENGAGEMENT COURSES (Code CZ)

These short courses are FREE and are designed as taster courses or for adults thinking about returning to learning.

COMMUNITY / LEISURE COURSES (Code CC)

There are three bands of fees and discounted rates for our Community/Leisure courses, these are:

BAND A: Full fee without any discounts

BAND B: Courses are * FREE for the following eligible learners:

Those in receipt of:

  • Job Seekers Allowance (JSA - WRAG)
  • Universal Credit (UC)
  • Employment Support Allowance (ESA - WRAG)

Plus, learners in receipt of income-based benefits:

  • Council Tax benefit
  • Housing benefit
  • Income Support
  • Working Tax Credit
  • Household income below * £25,000
  • Pension Guarantee Credit
BAND C - Gold Card: 10% fee discount will be given to Derbyshire Gold Card holders (this is the concessionary bus pass issued to older people and disabled people in Derby and Derbyshire).  This will only apply to those who do not meet the criteria for free courses outlined above.
Other fee remissions: British Sign Language courses and Makaton courses at Entry Level and Level One will be FREE to:
  • Learners who are deaf or hearing impaired
  • The spouse or civil partner of a deaf / hearing impaired person
  • The parent or carer of a deaf / hearing impaired person / child

* Evidence will need to be seen to be eligible for FREE courses.

EMPLOYABILITY WORKSHOPS (Code LU)

Our employability workshops are FREE and are designed to support individuals who are unemployed and looking for work.

SKILLS / QUALIFICATION COURSES

MATHS, ENGLISH AND ESSENTIAL DIGITAL SKILLS (Code LS)

English and maths courses that lead to a qualification are FREE for any learner (over 19 on the 31st August 2020) who does not already have English or Maths GCSE (or something equivalent) at grade A* to C or 4 to 9.

New this year are our FREE essential digital skills (up to and including Level 1) courses.  These courses are aimed at learners who may lack confidence or have limited skills using digital technology.

SKILLS / QUALIFICATION COURSES (Code LR)

LR coded qualification courses have the following fee bands and discounts:

BAND A: Full fee with any discounts

BAND B: Courses are * FREE for the following eligible learners:

  • Learners aged 19 - 23 years and joining an Entry, Level 1 or Level 2 course who do not already have a full Level 2 qualification (must either be part of local flexibility or be a legal entitlement qualification)
  • Learners aged 19 - 23 years and studying their first Full Level 3 qualification (must be a legal entitlement qualification)
  • Learners in receipt of Universal Credit and in a Work Group (work-related requirement, work preparation or work-focused interview) organised by Job Centre Plus and earn less than £338 per month (learner is sole adult in their benefit claim) or £541 a month (learner has a joint benefit claim with their partner)
  • Learners in receipt of Jobseekers’ Allowance (including JSA National Insurance Credit)
  • Learners in receipt of Employment Support Allowance (Work Related Activity Group only)
  • Learners who are employed or self-employed who earn less than * £17,004 gross annual salary.
  • Learners who are unemployed and actively seeking work enrolled on a course with the aim of improving employability and in receipt of:
    • Income support
    • Council Tax Benefit
    • Housing Benefit
    • Pension Guarantee Credit
    • Universal Credit

ESOL COURSES (Code LE)

English for speakers of other languages (ESOL) learning up to and including Level 2, fees are as follows:

BAND A: Full fee with any discounts

BAND B: Courses are * FREE for the following eligible learners:

LEVEL 3 & 4 QUALIFICATION COURSES (Code LX)

Level 3 qualification courses have the following fees:

  • FREE to learners who are aged 19 - 23 years and studying their first Full Level 3 qualification (must be a legal entitlement qualification)
  • Full fee to be covered by learner or with an Advanced Learning Loan - more information is available at https://www.gov.uk/advanced-learner-loan

Level 4 qualification courses have the following fees:

Please Note: Loans are not means tested or subject to credit checks.  Anybody who meets the above criteria will be able to apply for a loan, regardless of their current employment status.  You must show proof that you have successfully applied for a loan before you can enrol on a LX-prefixed course.
